I'm loving the brights. Neon yellow is my color of the season. I'm already up to to my ears in neon yellow boyfriend button downs, neon yellow jelly material handbags, and neon yellow jelly flats (a la J. Crew and Nine West). Now all I need is a necklace to mix and match as I see fit. Enjoy!

When we talk about transformation, there's no bigger leap that occurs than the moment one goes from employee to entrepreneur or underling to sitting-at-the-top so to speak. The uphill path to that point can seem insurmountable. And that is exactly where this boat stands, in rocky, torrid waters, facing harsh winds just hoping the storm will clear and the rainbow will emerge. You know, nothing shy of exactly what dreams are made of, or one dream in particular, "The American Dream."

I was listening to a piece on NPR, specifically the Diane Rhem Show (which is always excellent), about hunger in America and the rise of dependence on the SNAP (a.k.a food stamps) program just the other day. And just like that (specifically while driving in my new car headed into the office) one can be confronted with the staggering levels of poverty and less-than-ideal circumstance in this country. Immediately, you start to not only feel so blessed for all that God has bestowed on you but also somewhat ashamed, especially of your sometimes unabashed obsessions with consumerism, and abilities to be both prudent (yet seemingly frivolous when there are people out there who can't afford to feed their families) with personal and business (on this never ending pursuit) expenditures. It's moments of learning such as these that keep me humbled and focused on the larger mission of giving so much back, living life graciously, and all around being others oriented. And the beat goes on...

“For everyone to whom much is given, from him much will be required; and to whom much has been committed, of him they will ask the more.”

So we've all been there. Or maybe you've been lucky enough and haven't yet experienced what I'll refer to as Straight Ends Syndrome (A good example). It's what us curly girls get when we've been under moisturizing, over heating, über styling, and done too much shampooing. This is something that we at Pure Alchemy have lived, experienced, and still continually battle in the quest for gorgeously and versatilely styled natural hair.

The ultimate issue is hair elasticity and the root causes of how it's been lost. Hair elasticity is measured by that bounce or spring-back in curly, coily, and wavy tresses. It is essentially what we covet and require to get us to our most glamorous curl. Rather than focusing on how to measure it, because girl you know when your ends look dip-dyed and fried and are bone straight or waving to straightness while it's all nice and curly in the middle, we want to give our tips for giving your hair an instant curl boost.

The trick here is to rejuvenate your hair's elasticity by using conditioning and moisturizing products designed to restore elasticity. Products infused with horsetail and nettle extracts are perfect for this. Our favorite way to encourage the curls is to use a great conditioner, comb the product through for even application, and scrunch away. Scrunch hair all over. Let the conditioner or deep treatment sit on locks for 10-15 minutes. You can always use a hair steamer for better penetration. I love the powers of steam.

Conditioner isn't enough. Truly hydrated hair starts at the cleansing process. Shampoos that don't strip the hair but leave it soft are necessary. I once got into the habit of lathering 3 times every time I washed. Sure it sounds neurotic but it actually was a practice performed by a stylist I only saw every few months and I started doing it a few times a week. Bad news soon followed. I started to look like I was sticking my fingers in the electrical sockets, a la the picture above. From then on a daily moisture routine followed to recondition my tresses. I much prefer the cream moisturizing products to oils to use on a daily basis. It soon worked and the frizzy waves immediately turned back into curls.

Sometimes all the trying in the world can't fix the damage of the past. That's where a good old fashioned cut comes in. Sometimes you've got to let it go and start over. Beef up your moisture regimen going forward without looking back. Condition, condition, condition, gently cleanse, and hydrate daily with a good creme concoction.

For a long time, I was all over the shampoo bar craze. Always considering making the switch but never quite taking that first step. I even got so desperate to be clean head to toe once (after a long and sweaty day while in the middle of a move whereby all of my toiletries were stacked in some box, piled under more stuff) that I used a regular natural body bar soap on my hair and scalp. I was definitely less worried about the effects on my locks and more concerned (in my neuroses) about having a clean scalp. I'm hoping there are other OCD people out there that can relate *or not*.

Anyway, after performing quite a bit of research and deciding against the bars, mostly due to the fact that I needed to know what kind of water I have for the bars to not leave a residue on my hair, and then if I didn't know or felt a residue being left that I would have to then follow with a homemade remedy of apple cider vinegar. Are there those of us out there really still going through all of this trouble with these shampoo bars or do you only use them if you have soft water? I think a lovely SLS free, liquid shampoo that cleans while leaving my hair soft is all I need. Again, I'm neurotic about my clean. No co-washing, shampoo barring, every 2 weeks-ing it for me. And when my guy is smelling my hair complimenting me on how fresh it always smells, I can't help but beam with delight that someone has taken notice.

ST and CC are almost here en masse #PureAlchemy. Can't wait...

So I was perusing the pubs like I do on a monthly basis and came across a lovely Personal Transformations feature of a young teenage girl who's hair looked like it needed a crazy moisture boost and quite a bit of TLC in general. Don't you love it how the before pictures always make the person look not just scugly but also miserable? Talk about comedy. Either way, it's apparent I'm sure she's an otherwise happy go lucky attractive young woman, but geez...

Post Transformation

Her hair (ahem, look...The wonders of hair and makeup) has been completely revitalized with a cut, some layers, and an intense moisture regimen (similar to Curly Concoctions). Hydration is key when it comes to curly and coily tresses. Add the high style of this over-the-shoulder sultry look and she is ready for the town. A moisture regimen specifically designed for elasticity repair is the trick here. Here Pure Alchemy comes.

A Gorgeous Coif
